AUTHORITY: Just a short word this morning. There’s way too much to get done today and I have only a few minutes this morning to write. But what I want to say is important and worth the effort to share.
I have been involved in an ongoing conversation with a number of people regarding this idea of what it means to be guided and directed by God’s Word. Part of the conversation has involved me pushing back against those who like to say that one church is more “Bible-believing” than another.
I even listened to a preacher on video claims that one particular Christian denomination is wrong because it has, “abandoned the authority of scripture.” What that means, of course, is that there are disagreements regarding interpretation. So, to translate, “authority of scripture” actually means, “my interpretation.”
The Bible says a lot of things. That’s one of the reasons I love to read it all the time; because God is constantly teaching me, nurturing me, nourishing me, and equipping me to share the Good News of God’s love in this broken world.
UNFOLDING: That’s why the scripture from Psalm 119 (above) grabbed me today. The entire Psalm – and it’s a long one – is about how we encounter God through the scriptures; it’s worth taking the time to read, slowly and carefully.
But this one phrase – the unfolding of your words gives light – resonates for me today. God is continually revealing truth and wisdom and life and light; it’s a day-to-day process.
So here’s the image I want you to take with you from this post. Imagine a package of infinite dimensions; it contains a tapestry so beautiful that as each section is unfolded new wonder comes with the revelation; it’s like light cascading and dancing and celebrating the glory that is never fully displayed, is wrapped in mystery, and can never be completely understood….
That’s God’s Word. Read it every day.Unwrap the love – DEREK
